The No. 23 explorer is the most common type of dental explorer. Its hook-shaped working end transmits fine irregularities, restoration margins and hard deposits to the fingertips. For caries assessment on fissures and demineralised enamel, use light pressure only and do not force the tip into fissures. A sharp explorer can damage weakened enamel.
Applications: Examination, checking filling and crown margins, detecting supragingival calculus, checking after scaling.
